Google is working on a new file sharing tool, called ‘Fast
Share’, which will allow users to share files to nearby devices without
internet. Earlier, google provided the app ‘Android Beam’ to use NFC to transfer files between devices. But it was slow and rarely used.
The newer app Fast Share uses Bluetooth to initiate a handshake and then
transfers files over a Wi-Fi connection which results in a much faster transfer
of files. It also has the options to give your device ‘preferred visibility’ to
nearby devices which allow those devices to detect your device when you are
nearby.
This app is similar to Apple’s AirDrop technology, enabling the transfer of files among Mac computers and iOS devices. You can access the Fast share option in the sharing sheet. The
feature will require access to Bluetooth and a mobile hotspot. Some screenshots
are shown for reference.
How to send files by 'fast share' :
Select the files you want to share. Press the send icon to open the sharing sheet, as shown in image 1. Select the 'fast share' option. It will ask permission to access Bluetooth and hotspot. Press allow, and you can share files with any device you connect to. Right now, this feature is available on pixel devices (Android-Q), smartwatches, and Chromebooks.
